Seasoned pork sausage meat and sweet apple wrapped in crisp, golden puff pastry — ideal for an easy family dinner or sharing lunch.

Ingredients

  • 500g good-quality pork sausage meat
  • 1 eating apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
  • 1 x 320g sheet ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Salt and black pepper
Instructions

    Heat the oven to 200°C fan and line a baking tray.

    Mix the sausage meat with the apple, onion, sage, mustard and a little black pepper.
  3. 3
    Unroll the pastry and place the sausage mixture in a long mound down the centre.

    Cut diagonal strips along both sides of the pastry, then fold them alternately over the filling to form a plait.

    Brush thoroughly with beaten egg.

    Bake for 35-40 minutes until deeply golden and the sausage filling is cooked through.

    Rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Note
Serve warm with salad, vegetables or chutney. The plait is also excellent cold for picnics.
